455. the guru’s printing press

the guru wanted to print a kōan booklet, so his students set up a printing press in his school.

but when they printed the first book, the guru said, “this book is too small.”

so they printed it bigger, and he said, “the type is too dark.”

so they printed it lighter, and he said, “the cover is wrong.”

so they fixed the cover, and they gave him the book, and he looked it over and said, “it’s perfect, but there’s a problem.”

“what is it?” they asked.

“no zen,” the guru replied.
