187. the weight of the rock

one day while teaching at his school, the guru picked up a rock and asked, “how heavy is this rock?”

students called out different answers, but to each, the guru shook his head. when they were done, he said, “follow me.”

he walked out of his school and down to the lake, where he stood on the shore and said, “it is not the weight of the rock that matters, but the distance you carry it. a boulder can be hefted for only a moment, but even a pebble will tire your hands if you carry it always.”

he threw the rock into the lake.
