the guru had a student who studied the kōans and learned much of #zen.
but one day, they told the guru, “i have learned what i needed to know, and now, i must go out into the world and leave the kōans behind.”
the guru said, “you may leave my school behind, but you cannot leave the kōans, for they will follow you wherever you go.”
“like a stalker?” the student asked.
“no,” said the guru, “like seeds planted in your mind.”
